Enclosed parts washer

Project information

The goal with this project is to make cleaning CNC tooling and fixtures easier, the current issue is that when machine coolant sits on a surface, the water evaporates and leaves behind a stick oily nasty mess. Commonly called tramp oil, its a pain to remove for me currently as it requires me to place a large heavy fixture or a bunch of cat40 tools into a small sink and scrub away. It also doesn't help that the sink doesn't have a sprayer or a movable head.

So why not a normal drum top parts washer? Metal chips, our fixturing will have a fair amount of chips packed into holes and pockets that the machines coolant gun cant get to or remove. The drum style will clog up pretty quick or will need its fluid replaced often as I dont want to leave a layer of dirty oily parts washer liquid on the part. These reasons also apply to a large parts washer commonly used to wash engine blocks and transmission housings, but thoes have a main challenge of not being directed. the sprayers kind of just spray randomly and hope it fully cleans the part.

So how do i plan on solving these issues, first goal is bring a super dirty tool or fixture into this box and when it comes out it should be squeaky clean and dry.  I plan on achieving this with a few different methods. First step is to wash the part off with simple water. There will be a large strainer onto of the drain to catch loose parts or chips.  This helps keep the drain, filters, and pump from clogging or getting damaged. Then drain of this cabinet will actually be a 2in 3 way ball valve, in this first mode the drain will direct the waste water too a  floor drain or oil separator setup, Furthermore this setup can be improved with an instant hot water heater before the inlet, allowing you to do the first wash with hot water.

Then step two, with a push of a button the cabinet will switch the wash gun over to a chemical solution and the drain will now dump into the chemical tank. This is when the bulk of the actual cleaning will happen, the tank itself will have heaters within to maintain about a 100*f solution of aluminum friendly cleaning solution. To make the washing as easy as possible, which for me is important as if it requires 20 different steps then putting something away dirty will happen naturally, the pump should have some kick to it as well as alot of flow. My current plan is to look for a centrifugal multistage pump, something that can produce close to 300-500 psi with a 4-8gpm rating. Considering these pumps can cost 10k new, im currently watching auctions and ebay for a good deal.  From there you will simply hose off the part, getting into all the nooks and crannies, leaving you with a super clean part. With the use of a VFD i should be able to dial back the pressure and flow if the parts im cleaning are fragile.

Once the part has been cleaned it will then need to be rinsed. To do this you will switch it back over to the previous mode, rinse the part off just like before. This allows you to not have any scale or weirdness that the parts cleaner might leave behind. You can further improve this by using deionized water for this step. At this point the part is nearly perfect but its still wet, so an air hose withen the cabinet will allow you to blow off the tool or fixture, making sure to get into the tight areas. An optional addon i might add is some way to spray rust inhibitor withen the cabinet, that stuff is normally pretty nasty for the lungs so keeping contained would be ideal, just depends on the space i have.

With that said ventilation will be important for this,  This is still a wip for me, but the plan is to have what ever exits the cabinet be clean and safe to breathe. I would also like to have a turbo mode, something that would co-exist with a door interlock, so when you command the door to open, and the pump has ran withen the last minute, the exhaust would take a couple seconds to evacuate the chamber allowing you to safely grab your parts.
